WE RIDE 3in1

We at Modeka are true 3in1 fans. If you have taken a closer look at our Adventure and Tour Collections, you will have seen a few 3in1 motorcycle jackets and pants already.

The idea behind it and the advantages is brings is what we want to explain to you here.

WHAT IS 3in1?

3in1 describes the combination of 3 clothing layers in one jacket or pair of pants. The single layers are connected via zippers and/or buttons. If you are an owner of a Modeka 3in1 jacket and loosen all the zippers and buttons you can spread 3 jackets in front of you. The same goes for our pants, of course.

WHY 3IN1?
We are sure you have heard of the onion or layer principle before. The onion principle describes a combination of multiple clothing layers to optimally regulate your body temperature and protect against changing temperatures and weather conditions. A layer can be taken off or put on depending on weather and personal feeling. If it gets too warm you take a layer off, if you get cold you put it back on.

By combining different layers moisture gets led away from the skin and the body is always warm and dry. Small air pockets in-between the layers keep you warm.

3 Layers: The Outer Layer

The outer layer offers protection, practicality, and comfort.

Protection: Abrasion and tear-resistant materials are used exclusively. The material is reenforced with especially abrasion-resistant material at supposed crash-heavy spots like shoulders, elbows, and knees.

Comfort: To ensure person comfort, stretch material gets implemented into certain areas with high use in a riding position (bent legs, stretched arms). Additionally, we inlcuded many effective vents to prevent hot air from concentrating in your suit, even during high temperatures.

Practical Features: Pockets. It is especially important to have enough pockets on your outer jacket to quickly reach the things you are carrying around. We provide detailed information about the number of pockets and their waterproofness for all your products.

3IN1: The Middle Layer

The middle layer, also called membrane, mainly provides waterproofness.

The membrane also provides airtightness and is breathable despite being waterproof.

We work together with different membrane brands:

In our Adventure line we exclusively use the German brand Sympatex®.

Sympatex® has an extreme water column of 45,000 mm and is especially breathable and regulates temperature dynamically.

To give information about a water column you measure the water pressure a water column of a specific height exercises on a material without penetrating it with water. According to EN 343 every material of above 1,300 mm is classified as waterproof. The higher the water column, the more water pressure it can handle.

But a waterproof membrane material does not make a jacket or a pair of pants 100% waterproof without making the seams waterproof as well. Do achieve this we weld the seams from the inside with a welding machine. To ensure that they stay waterproof you should wash the membrane according to the recommended washing instructions: 30°C in a gentle wash with liquid detergent.

If you unzip and remove the membrane jacket or pants you are no longer waterproof. This is an advantage during dry and warm temperatures. You are only wearing the outer layer and can enjoy the ventilation to its fullest.

3IN1: THE INNER LAYER

The inner layer is a thermo layer and serves as isolation of body temperature and to transport moisture from the inside to the outside. We use quilted fabric with a polyester batting. They keep the body warm in colder temperatures. They also keep this quality while they are wet and dry quickly. You can wear this layer when it is cold outside or if you are sensitive to cold temperatures. When it is warm the thermo layer can be easily removed with the help of zippers and/or buttons.

The inner layer of our Adventure line is a complete quilted jacket that can also be worn away from the motorcycle. This way you do not need to pack an extra jacket and you have more space for other things. Since 2021 the quilted jacket – called Midlayer – can be bought separately and worn underneath any other Modeka jacket.

What are the advantages of 3in1?

The 3in1 construction is ideal for the whole year.

The best part of the onion or layer principle is its flexibility: When temperatures rise you can just remove a layer. It if gets colder or it starts to rain you simply put it back on. The important part is understanding the different function layers as part of the overall concept.

You should always combine the different clothing layers according to their functions, those being moisture and climate management. Only this way you can regulate your body temperature ideally.

INDIVIDUAL SENSITIVITY TO WARMTH AND COLD

In principle, Modeka 3in1 covers a wide range of temperatures, which may differ based on your own sensitivity. Everyone perceives warmth and cold in a different manner. Based on our test driver’s reports we can give temperature recommendations of between 5 and more than 40 degrees (in the Adventure line, which uses thicker thermo lining). This way you can use all layers during winter and a single layer with ever option for ventilation during the hot summer. What else is there to want?

FOR WHOM ARE 3IN1 SUITABLE

They are suitable for all-weather riders with little room in their closets.

Instead of a) storing and b) carrying winter, summer and rain gear a 3in1 product can make your life easier and saves on gas. Our 3in1 construction gives you 100 % flexibility and you can decide on which layers you want to pack and which you can safely leave at home based on the current weather situation.

For journeys through different climate zones:

You should always prepare for changing weather during long trips – not matter where you go. For example, you should expect a fall in temperature if you are crossing the alps when traveling from Germany to Italy. Dry and wet weather will probably alternate and a 3in1 construction will make sure you are equipped to handle the changing weather. That is why our Adventure line focusses almost exclusively on 3in1 products.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO FOCUS ON WHEN CHOOSING MY SIZE?

That depends entirely on you. Ask yourself in which seasons and weathers you will be driving the most. If you are sure that you will not be using the thermal lining more than 3 times a year, because you prefer to ride during fair weather, sample the product without the thermal lining.

If you ride in every weather condition or commute and like to wear a fleece sweatshirt underneath the complete jacket, we recommend simulating this scenario in the fitting room.

OPTIMIZE THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE 3IN1 PRINCIPLE

We recommend wearing functional underwear. At all times. Functional underwear helps transporting water from your body to the outside, keeping your body dry. It also keeps your body from cooling down.

You can wear functional underwear underneath every layer of a 3in1 product in every type of weather – it will always make you feel comfortable. It also makes it much easier to put on or remove your motorcycle clothes. We at Modeka carry 2 types of functional underwear. Dry Tech, just like our 3in1 products, can be worn all year round and functions as moisture regulation in every weather.

Cool Tech was specifically developed for warm summer days. The underwear cools wonderfully thanks to the woven-in Coolmax® fibres.

OBJECTIVE: WHAT SPEAKS AGAINST 3IN1?

Sure, 3in1 clothes are heavier than other constructions. But only when you are wearing every layer. It is very likely that you will not ride around wearing all three layers the whole year round. You are very flexible with 3in1 and do not need individual clothes for every type of weather.

YOU ARE CONFUSED?

3in1 clothes may look complicated at first. It requires a bit of concentration to match all the zippers with each other. You can do it. The differently coloured zippers show you what goes where.

THE OUTER MATERIAL IS SOAKING UP WATER?

Yes, the outer jackets or pants can soak up water. That is correct. That is because the membrane is the second layer underneath the outer jacket. We say: Do not panic, because we have already waterproofed the outer material for you. This way a light shower will simply pearl off you. We recommend repeating the waterproofing process once a year.
Still: Laminated products have an advantage here. If this is an especially important aspect for you, because you plan to ride during rain showers a lot, we recommend checking out our VIPER LP combination or simply browsing our rainwear.

CONCLUSION
Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. But with 3in1 you can do anything, and you only need to buy 1 product.
